Peculiar Balloons

In 1953 an earthquake raze to the ground our island Kefalonia and left us homeless and with many wounded and dead. The army came to our aid. A platoon campet in our village Faraklata. Also young men and women activist from French., England, America came to help. Doctors, carpenters, cooks and other skills. Among them a beautiful phychiatrist  named Yvone who spoke Greek , was astonish by the fact that women were giving birth non-stop despite their poverty. So she arranged a meeting to teach them about contraceptives. Some women dare to take home boxes of condoms. My mother gave a box to a neighbour along with instructions on the matter. That evening her husbant screamed so loud that all the neighbourhood could hear. << Are you trying to kill me you bitch? I am not going to wear nothing. I rather cut it and throw it to the dogs to eat it you bitch>>. The next day on our way to school on the street out of his door we found the box of condoms ( balloons to our way of thinking). After school we all had the time of our life blowing them. In fact we were so happy that no matter how much air we put in them they did not break. But a soldier came by and told us to stop playing with them and told some of the oldest boys what they were for. He ask if we have some in the box that he can give us money for them. So our peculiar balloons became caramel and chocolates.
